Netflix Monday - Despicable Me

Who is more surprised when Universal Pictures has a hit movie or franchise, moviegoers or Universal Pictures themselves?

I watched 'Despicable Me' for Netflix Monday and honestly, I think you should too.  Lets break down the details and numbers.

Netflix Monday - Despicable Me
Viewed: 4-20-2020
Starring: Steve Carell, Jason Segel
Director: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud

Release Date: July 9, 2010
Released With: Predators

Budget: $69 mil.
Opening Weekend: $56.3 mil.
Domestic: $251.5 mil.
Worldwide: $543.1 mil.

This movie by the numbers is a HUGE success.  It has spawned a successful franchise of two sequels as well as a spin-off movie featuring the true stars: the Minions.  There is not a Halloween or Christmas holiday that goes by that I do not see more and more of the Minion inflatables populate a front lawn.

The movie is textbook and I think that is why it works so well.  A great mix of slapstick comedy, some crude humor, good characters and an easy story.  Also the runtime is at an hour and a half.  Many movies suffer from wanting to pad a runtime to go 2+ hours.  But simplicity works so much better.

The story is centered on Gru, who is competing against Vector to try and steal the moon for a title as best villain in the world.  Gru adopts three girls as a ploy to gain entry into Vector's hideout.

For a good, easy night of entertainment.  Check out Despicable Me on Netflix.

Opening Weekend: $26.8 mil. Domestic: $73.1 mil. Worldwide: $122.8 mil. Some sequels strive to be better than its predecessor.  Most come up empty and are seen as a cash grab for what they are.  'Zombieland: Double Tap' is a solid movie.  Great for wasting an afternoon on a rainy day or good horror/comedy with a partner for a good ol' night in on the couch.  By solid I mean that the movie does not veer off too much from the first movie.  There are some slight changes to its universe such as varying degrees of zombies and the character themselves have began to settle into roles of a family.  Each of...
