I'll admit that I chose 'The Holiday' as my Showtime Sunday movie because I thought it would be easy pickings to completely riff on the movie for its cheesiness. I figured that it would be like most Romantic Comedies and would just follow staples of Boy meets Girl, throw in a gimmick, comedy ensues, Boy and Girl end up together. And with 4 pretty strong leads, I figured this movie might be better than most. Boy was I wrong...Was. I. Wrong.

Movie: The Holiday

The Numbers

I have nothing against Romantic Comedies. I have even seen a few that I've enjoyed and would not be ashamed to watch them over and over again. 'Love Actually' is a prime example of a good romantic comedy (RC). The problem with The Holiday is not that it is bad, its just boring. Kate Winslet who plays Iris, seems to try and bring some acting to this movie, but everyone else, including Jude Law are just there for 2+ hours.
The Holiday is brought to us by veteran RC director, Nancy Meyers whom has helmed better movies like 'The Intern'. Two women have been spurned by their former love interests. Iris's ex-boyfriend and crush, Jasper, announces a surprise engagement at a holiday party to another woman. Amanda (Diaz) is a successful woman whose current boyfriend cheats on her with his secretary. Also, Amanda cannot cry. Through a travel-planning gimmick where two people exchange houses, Amanda flies to a quaint English town to reside in Iris's home for the Christmas holiday. Meanwhile, Iris flies out to Los Angeles to reside in Amanda's lavish mansion.
Once Amanda arrives in England, Kate Winslet fades into the background. Jude Law plays Graham, Iris's brother, whom starts an affair with Amanda. He's also a widower with two kids, but we do not discover that until about an hour and a half into the movie.
If you are bored and confused yet by this movie, how do you think I felt?
Kate Winslet's Iris meets up with Arthur, an elderly neighbor of Amanda who is from "Old Hollywood". They start up a friendship, and then Jack Black shows up and I guess sparks fly? Iris does get some character retribution by officially rejecting her crush, played by Rufus Sewell.
My official review: this movie is bland. Confusing at parts, especially when it comes to the actual time in the movie. I hope to forget this movie soon. Trust me when I say there are more fun RC movies out there. If you do wish to endure this movie, it is available for streaming on Showtime.
